A Profile of Food in College

Eating healthy in college can be really difficult. There are many challenges you may face. For example limited access to a real kitchen (when living in dorms or greek housing), budgeting (eating at restaurants – even fast food ones – gets expensive real quick), and the obvious challenge of cooking.

I found an article, posted by “Study Breaks” that discusses the challenges a bit more in depth and provides some recommended solutions and possibilities for the average student.

Another source I discovered, “Life Hackers,” cited various sources and studies on weight gain in college. The key to a balanced diet is what we eat. Often students can get caught up in the routine of school and neglect to eat the proper nutrition they need. The website also provides some tips on how to eat a balanced diet.

There are many sources that provide potential solutions to the hectic diet of a college student, but I believe there needs to be more emphasis on how to actually follow through. It is important to acknowledge that different people have different dietary needs so it is my goal to make this blog as broad as possible!

From my experience, eating healthy is based on eating regularly. As much as I dislike breakfast, grabbing a Lara Bar or a KIND bar is better than starving myself until I get done with my three, hour long classes.

When I get home from class, I will always take the time to eat some lunch. Despite having various assignments or tasks due, I know that ultimately if my hunger is satisfied, I will be more efficient in my work. Lunch might look like: carrots and a salad, toast with peanut (or almond) butter, and some fruit (usually, banana). I usually take my multi-vitamin along with my lunch just to be sure I get the vitamins I need.

A final source is a blog titled, “Eating with a College Student.” Neil, the blogger, has similar posts to those which I plan on posting. He posts recipes and restaurant reviews. A main thing to note about his recipes are the cost, he aims to make the meal affordable for a college student while still nutritious.
